I legit do not feel that the violence or gore is overly indulged-in. Rather, I feel that thinking of it as indulged-in or done for the sake of it is evidence of just how censored everything usually is by default. It well and truly just doesn't hold back, and even where the gore *is* clearly meant to evoke revulsion I think it serves a thematic purpose. It wouldn't work if it weren't juxtaposed against genuine beauty.

This. With refrence to the shared bath on the 4th layer, it's a cathartic inversion of the orb piercer, for instance. I'll just copypaste from before:
>Nanachi is watching so they're safe and protected
>allows them to literally revisit the scene of their biggest and most traumatic fuckup while being totally naked and vulnerable
>direct callback to the mouth-to-mouth "kiss" that got Riko's breathing started again
>elements of levity/cuteness with how shy Reg is towards Riko and with Nanch teasing them
>the fact that this is where Nanachi makes the decision internally to keep going
>inverting the orb-piercer scene into a scene of healing and renewal
>if you really wanted to go there, Reg's funny and harmless boner replacing the "OH SHIT" of the orb piercer penetrating Riko, in the same setting
>literally being washed clean
>the fish that nibble away all your dead skin so you're fresh and renewed instead of the pissed-off murderbeast
>friendly Nanachi keeping watch and joking around with them with face showing instead of fully-cloaked creepy Nanachi stalking them in silence
>the mild stinging of the hot water on Riko's arm as she talks a hesitant Reg through getting her into the bath instead of the agony of Riko talking Reg through breaking the same arm with a rock
All-in-all it really is the perfect resolution bookending the violence of the 4th layer. It's catharsis. Yeah, it has elements of "AYO WHY THIS ANIME SUS" but if you're not someone who reacts like that, you get to enjoy some truly solid writing.
