I only have two issues with the arc and they are connected - Nanachi was too smart and had to be written out for most of it, and Mitty was brought back to do it. Mitty shouldn't be brought back at all on principle. Even in the current arc I am worried that Nanachi's injuries and Mitty hallucinations will be used as a convenient excuse to cut her from the plot for a dozen chapters while Tsucc does something big, like having Srajo betray Riko.

You legit don't get it. At no point is Tsucc like, "Man, you know what would be super-edgy?" There's not a single element of this story that was included for that purpose.
When people look at the sexually-charged stuff I think they misunderstand. He's not just using the story as a vehicle to get away with the fetish stuff, and he's not just inserting it willy-nilly either. He is writing a story that is well and truly born from the world of his imaginations, and that includes his libido. You're mistaken and do not get how shit works if you think there would or even could *be* a Made In Abyss without the weird stuff.
As for the gore or the "edgy" stuff, it is legitimately never indulgent in it for the sake of it. It just doesn't censor parts of it that would normally be censored.
I'll happily defend the baby-eating or the diarrhea in the sixth layer, I'll happily defend any of the moments of kid-unfriendly suffering, and I will happily defend the lolisho stuff too. It's like people's brains turn off when something makes them even a little uncomfortable.
Also, Made In Abyss is not shocking. It is lastingly and penetratingly haunting, and the distinction matters.
Also also, for what this is worth, MiA's reputation as "le edgy anime where kids are juxtaposed with mature themes" fails to do it justice. Nobody manages to capture the sense of childlike earnestness and wonder quite like Tsucc, there are almost naively fairy-tale-esque moments all over, and it has a tremendous amount of emotional warmth to it.

One thing I haven't seen discussed much is how Tsucc has used these small and admittedly understated but lasting scars to change character design slowly over time. Riko is legit being torn up and processed very slowly by the pit.

I recently got in this series but I'm having issues

The manga extras have info on those but aside of that it doesn’t go on a throughly exploration of the abyss. Early on they were rushing to not be captured and brought back to the surface and later on they were struggling to survive. We got a few moments when they seemed to become strong enough to explore the abyss safely but that turn out to be wrong so they can’t really explore it, they are more on a direct route to the bottom while exploring the surrounds on the way there.

I've never seen this claimed verified. Before you cite the English wikipedia page, I've seen it lie about the sex and number of children historical figures had and confuse a voice actor and her pseudonym as two separate people. And that's just things I've found by accident. Yeah, the entire point of the setup for the story is that Riko's basically using Reg to speedrun her way to the bottom. It's gonna bite her in the ass in the end when she gets to the bottom, finds out all the answers she was seeking are disappointing, and realizes she wasted any chance of stopping and smelling the roses along the way.

Storywise, the main appeal of the village arc to me was the unraveling of it's mystery and how it's manner of revealing traits to do so made wider implications of the nature of relics and the abyss and generally suited the thematic nature of the series. In most series flashbacks suck, but here it worked contextually as such. Dropping into the flashback right away robbed it of it. Also the anime's greater fixation on faputa didn't help considering, she was never the intriguing part of it. Aspects that surround her, i.e gabarun, the old language, regs past, her physically anomalous nature carried some interest but her character is not worthy of fixation for it's shallow.

What Riko and Nanachi could do after Reg passed out? If I recall correctly the reason that the native girl Irumiyuui became the village was because she had a powerful desire to be a mother despite her barren womb, so the cradle not only gave her a functioning womb but tranformed her into a giant womb that the rest of the squad took advantage of and went on to live inside her. I have never seen Riko show even an inkling of a desire to be a mother but instead to BE LIKE her mother, so if they applied the cradle to her she might just tranform into a superpowerful gigastacy cave delver and race off to the bottom of the Abyss without them, much like Lyza before her. I believe this was Wzu's endgoal, and if I am correct this makes the writing shlocky because it was stated that the "Cradle of Desire" is not something that turn hopeful children into villages but makes literal their most pure desires. But I don't really know if Tsukushi meant this, since the dialogue and text in that whole arc was just so vague. In short, it remains my belief that Wazu was a nearly broken man hanging on by a tenuous thread of hope that he might be able to break out of this cage they built and deliver what was left of his team to the city if gold they dreamt of.

I personally doubt Riko would even survive using a cradle of desire. There's a lot of talk about people's most treasured thing/haku, but what is Riko's? Is it Reg? Her adventure? The abyss itself? She is far from an uncomplicated child with a single minded desire.

Speak for yourself. Made In Abyss is one of only a handful of series I'll openly rep. It TRANSCENDS animanga. It hits in a way that other series don't even if you consume anime and manga like water. It is GENUINELY special. It's art the existence of which really does make the world a better place. I'm glad I got ro be alive in this time so that I could witness it. It's not just one of the best anime/manga series, it's one of my hyperfixations because it's just one of the best pieces of media from the past decade and a half, PERIOD. Tsucc legit gives me hope for the direction of this fucking medium in a sea of slop, man.

I gush about the other aspects of it all the time, but I won't deny that I am thrilled as hell it's a lolisho series. Not just because I am a lolicon, but because loli having a representative that is inarguably quality media makes me feel smug.
There's plenty of smut that isn't also a uniquely beautiful piece of media with stellar visual art, worldbuilding, and music, though. Tsucc legit inspires me and I like to watch his streams as I draw, so it's actually kinda heartbreaking if I came across as only appreciating the uoohh. Tsucc is someone who persisted with his passion when it got hard. Man is a colorblind artist who uses number values to produce shit like picrel. That is INSANE and makes MiA special in that it is truly a piece of art that could only exist today, thanks to digital media.

Early when it was still just Cave Story (by the author's own admission even) I would have said an analogue of pic related but it's diverted so much from the end of Idofront onwards that I can't be sure.
