in europe, maize isn't the predominant type of corn, wheat is.
that's why instead of maize syrup, we use wheat syrup inside our trash foods.
it's called glucose-fructose syrup, and it is comparable to hfcs in price, versatility, and adding empty calories to your food.

i'm from germany. our preferred sugar water is iced tea, or durstlöscher.
sodas and capri sun are popular too, but durstlöscher is the most german one i can think of. pic related.
you will probably struggle to find a country without comparable sugary trash drinks in every supermarket.
