Not a Muslim, but I've learned a bit about them and if you understood who Aisha was it would all make sense.
Mohammad's wives were all adults except Aisha. Aisha was the daughter of Abu Bakir, Mohammad's close friend and supporter.
According to Shiia islam, Abu desired to be Mohammad's successor and knew he was likely in line to rule the Caliphate given his tribes support, but became worried when Mohammad implied his son in law Ali would succeed him.
So Abu basically convinced Mohammad to marry his prepubescent daughter so that any intention of creating a bloodline succession through Fatima would be disputed, because Aisha would be Mohammad's wife so how could Ali get favoritism?
Basically, it was all political coup shit; despite the claims of Mohammad being a pedo over Aisha I don't think historical evidence backs this. Also the Shiia claim she poisoned him and fed the original Koran to sheep.
