This is just to reaffirm that maybe you are confusing stuff from all the games.
The only thing about Maero and Wrestling is a line in the later games where Phillipe (A character from SR3) speaks with him in SR IV (the one with virtual reality and aliens) when you call them as homies and he tells him that he (Maero) reminds him of a an associate of his (Killbane the wrestler from SR3) and asks him if he ever considered masked wrestling to which Maero responds with "Well, I don't like... wait, what?"

I mean I legit think it's not about subjectively disliking or liking the game anymore and more of that you are misremembering a lot of stuff.
