1. Smells (and taste by extension, being related mechanically) are processed by the brain in a region tightly connected to the one that handles memory. So these senses are particularly easy to forge memory-associated connections with.
2. When you're young, your control/familiarity with your senses don't develop evenly. Smell develops MUCH earlier than sight, so by the time your brain starts to master vision, it's already had a lot of practice relating everything in the world to smell. And your emotions, of course, have a stronger impact on you when you're younger as well.
