You boost the stats by a random amount and then you can reroll the boost percentages to see if you can get better numbers. Every stat can be boosted by a multiplier between +10% (x1.1) to +200% (x3).
This calibration system is then supported by a further "extreme calibration" system, which eliminates the randomness of your rolls and allows you to max out the attachment. There are orange chips (useless, counterproductive even) and yellow chips (rare and good). Essentially, the first stage of calibration is about fishing for better stats to minimize the amount of yellow chips you're going to spend in the second stage. All of this requires enormous amounts of gold, obviously.
