Their story never made sense in the context of Marvel because everybody loves Spidey and the Fantastic Four, but because the X-Men got their powers from a mutant gene, now it's a problem.

Now, the mutants literally try to segregate themselves, and the writers don't see the irony. Back in the day, the X-Men actually assimilated society. Hmmm, wonder why the message changed...
