Anyway I agree that it was necessary, but only to try it out to see if it would work. Kryptman's scheme was early in the days of the Tyranid invasion, and everyone was collectively shitting their pants.
IF IT HAD WORKED, the guy would have been fine and wouldn't be villainizedby his colleagues. But it didnt, and no one knew the astronomicom was attracting the hive mind.
Burning several planets for the scientific equivalent of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks would certainly raise some eyebrows, but not if it had worked. More horrific and wasteful shit happens all the time in 40k, but the slight benefit gives it a pass, which Kryptman didnt have.
