It's clearly wrong in both cases because the memes derive from the story so if people aren't playing the games and reading then you would have no clue what is going on with the art trends. Granted with both Touhou and BA you can just read the story scripts/momotalks etc. online and skip the game entirely and you're getting most of the same experience. People who play the game enjoy interacting with the girls or personally leveling them up(at the launch of BA there was very little emphasis put on student gifts but they realized that players were putting a lot of effort on trying as hard as possible to max out affection with their favorite students which takes forever so rewards slowly shifted more into providing more gifts)
