They existed in newspaper strips for a time. Joe Palooka was a popular boxing comic. Actually one of the few remaining long running "soap opera" comics, Gil Thorp, is a sports/teen drama comic about a football coach.
Also in the UK they have a very successful comic called Roy of the Rovers about a soccer player, and probably others.
