Many regulations are completely pointless and counterproductive. They exist solely as barriers to entry for new players, and that's their only purpose.

To sell a product, a manufacturer has to jump through 100 burning hoops. A large player, who likely lobbied for these regulations, simply spends huge sums of money to comply, passing those costs onto the consumer. Meanwhile, a new player can't enter the market because these regulations aren't about product quality—they're just barriers. The new manufacturer lacks the resources to waste on complying with regulations that lead nowhere.

A good example of this is the UK meat market, where cow feces must be disposed of in a specific way using electrification, supposedly because cow feces increase CO2 levels in the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.

You can see how absurd this is and that disposing of manure through electric shocks has nothing to do with the quality of meat products. But thanks to this regulation, small farmers can't enter the market because the equipment is quite expensive.
