It was a trend. I mean a lot of Americans back then were generally racist and xenophobic as fuck towards Japan. They kept grabbing shit from beneethe their asses like monkeys and kept throwing it at Japanese games that had things like colors instead of piss filter, young attractive characters instead of ugly unlikable talking potatos, and tone that didn't revolve around all characters saying "fuck", "shit", "whore", "bitch", "pussy", "dick", "piss", and "asshole" every single sentence

It doesn't really matter. most of their """"""""""criticism"""""""""" was just cringeworthy juvenile insults and middle school tier jokes with zero arguments. most of the time it felt like they didn't even play most of the games that they were """"""""""criticizing"""""""""". It's extremely sad because I love 2000s and 00s Jap media. The one good thing I can say about modern times is how the popularity of Japanese media in the west has massively increased. A lot of stuff that westerners didn't even bother to give a chance back then has gained huge appreciation in recent years
