They were and still are to a select few who keep the torch lit (think Gen Xers with arcade garages), but the reason why they generally aren't anymore is because they're being marketed and consumed by generations that have skewed frames of reference and think games like Galaga are boring. We can partially thank parents for handing their baby a touch screen device, but that's just a taste.
