Sports and video game coverage aren't really comparable. Sports watchers follow teams and players, they like watching highlights and stats and people who know the sport discussing it. ESPN can appeal to both a broad range of people who like sports and the dedicated fans of each major sport they cover. A show/channel that covers video games can't work in the same way because there aren't players or teams to cover (nobody gives a shit about esports) and any coverage they do on games is too shallow to be worth watching because they can't dedicate the time necessary to go in depth and if they did it would alienate people who don't give a shit about that game. They maybe could have segmented it to have coverage of specific genres, but that would split their already niche audience. Sports are bigger for tv than video games are, so it's taken longer, but ESPN is falling for the same reason. ESPN 15+ years ago was all about highlights on SportsCenter and more in depth conversations about sports, but now it's all hot take, Stephen A. Smith, and Pat McAfee shows all created to produce clips for social media. The only reason sports on tv will never truly die like video games is live sports games. Until streaming becomes easier and cheaper, sports networks will survive.

ATH got killed for a bunch of reasons, though none of them actually official as Reali and company have been told it's over by ESPN and getting stonewalled when Reali wanted answers.

While the show's ratings were still high purely due to it's time slot (paired with Pardon the Interruption and right before the 6PM Sportscenter), it had been in heavy decline since the mid-10s.
