Maekawa literally made Shadow to be 'Sonic but cool' according to his own sensibilities since he didn't like mega drive era Sonic.
It's impossible to divorce Shadow from this since it is his entire premise.
He was built to be diarrhea that shits all over Tails' role as the friendly rival speedster with potential to surpass Sonic, Knuckles' as the adversarial rival whose strength is overwhelming, Metal Sonic's role as a perverted reflection of Sonic, and Amy's role as the other hedgehog main character.
He is a blight upon this franchise. While some interpretations and fan works might succeed at caging his scope and perverting his original vision, his original vision is a cancer upon this franchise.

Blaze is a good Shadow since she's better written, she isn't the same species, she has a good antagonist (Eggman Nega), and she's confined to her own world so she doesn't bleed into everything. Blaze is an infinitely more compelling and interesting character than Shadow who has a well-earned place within this franchise who sadly Maekawa perverted with 06 and she's been shackled to that terrible white abomination.
