I think Silver sort of ruined what it takes to be a new Sonic character. Shadow added in the drama and sadness. He was his own thing. Then Silver tried to be another new powerful hedgehog with a dramatic backstory. His design looks like someone took Sonic and gave him a final fantasy themed paintjob, especially if you look at the FF games that were out and teased around the time 06 released.
06 was so fucking bad that we didn't get any new anthros until infinite. A decade later. All of that time for Silver to stew in peoples heads as what it means to be an OC.
Most of our IDW comic writers became adults during that time period and now they do nothing but create melodramatic ocs who's only worth is getting fucked.

You know guys, after reading the new manga, I'm starting to think there might be some serious drawbacks to the entire wind formula. We've seen this exact scenario maybe ten times by now? And on top of it each time before it at least had a twist. Chris had that whole fish out of water thing. Elise had the romance (Get over it) Tails was the first new character. We get Tails's adaptation done over again. There are various arcs in the comics with a similar set up and very rare twists.
Surge exists specifically to flip this concept on its head and everyone is a bit tired of it.

She proves her worth, but Blaze tells Marine not to run off again. Marine promises to be more mature the next time she sees Sonic and Tails. Blaze consoles Marine at the end of Rush Adventure.

Marine reappears in IDW and we see how she matured. Marine also appears in the Sonic Channel comics where we can see how Blaze and Marine work as a duo.

So even if you show his internal monologue, it's difficult to tell what's truly going on with him or whether he's interested.

Sonic is a multimedia franchise and I personally do not limit myself to the games when it comes to how I understand the canon. I do limit myself to Sonic Team/SoJ. While the games are, of course, the main part and hopefully will always be the main part, there is other material in this franchise that exists.

Because if it's not in the games, it's not canon material. The games lead the charge on all canon media within the franchise and dictates what Sonic Team wants to be the most widespread and consumed material/interpretations of their characters. Just because Sonic Team likes Shadria does not mean it exists within the games. If they wanted it to exist in the games, they would write it into the games because they want that romantic interpretation of the ship to be the way people see the characters. Just like writing out that Amy has romantic feelings for Sonic because they want that to be part of how people see Amy in relation to Sonic (or at least used to). But instead they wrote Shadow and Maria to be like siblings instead, because that is what they intend to be the widespread default consumed information of their characters. Blushing is not an emotion only saved for romantic implication, it's also for embarrassment and/or shyness/bashfulness. For example, getting teased for doing something odd or weird in front of a sibling leads to embarrassment and subsequently blushing. Or when you do something you don't usually do, but try in front of your parents and are shy/insecure about it. Once again, determining how this blushing comes across is left up to headcanon and interpretation at best. I could see it as bashfulness because Shadow does not usually receive such earnest comments about his features being "cool" since Maria's comments before that about knowing he's part alien and that what's important is that he sticks to who he is recognizes insecurity over said features. From Tails' perspective, Sonic is his rival that he's constantly got to measure himself up against. Her gem obsession means nothing because Shadow has no reason to care if Rouge is stealing gems. Shadow himself can not EVER work with the Core 4 because he's a Sonic clone. And Shadow being "even cooler Sonic" means he overshadows Sonic as well. Shadow destroys the core 4 and Sonic himself simply by existing in their proximity.
