That's the problem, ideals are pretty to look at but when faced against reality, it was too much and that broke him. Truth is Kiritsugu died a broken crippled loser who lost everything and Shirou is close to sharing the same fate if he continues down the Fate or UBW route. Only through Heaven's Feel can he find salvation.
