Those are great ones to start with for sure. I'll give my recommendations for the next ones you should try.
>Secret of Mana
It's still one of my favorite games and yes I had it when it came out and played it three player. It was the first action RPG I ever played and beat. Zelda LttP before that was the closest I got. It's flaws IMO are actually some strengths. The combat and gameplay reward loop are so addicting, and I've played it through 100% dozens of times.
>F-Zero
Simple but addicting and very well made. Still holds up today.
>Super Mario Kart
Fucking hard, and not the best now with two player battle mode, but it's where it all started. My favorite way to play it is 2 player GP mode on 150cc. You'll have to work together to even have a chance of winning.
>Star Fox
Once you get past the framerate it's like riding a bicycle and it's so damn good. Great levels, great combat, amazing music.The branching path and shortcuts/secrets allow you so much variety in how you play it.
You've already been looking at Contra III, Chrono Trigger so I'll leave those out. If you like RPGs there is of course FFII, III, Earthbound. All are must plays. For the last, number 5 I'll say Mega Man X. It has the pinazz of Contra III in the Mega Man format. Amazing music, bombastic levels and action. Adds some decent depth to the Mega Man formula from the NES games. Last stage is fucking hard and I've never actually beat the game.
