Neither of those are stains nor are they specific to just our government.
The biggest stain on The United States was our senseless brother war where we spent 4 years destroying the flower of our people's youth to empower a tyrannical government which can now compel our formerly free people to submit to an almighty federal power.
Our next great stain was instituting an unconstitutional income tax, creating an independent and private national bank, and setting the 20th and 21st centuries up for failure by our morally reprehensible decisions to intervene in European politics in defense of international finance.
