Most red dots are not true 1.0x, they're typically like 1.05x or 1.1x but I'm not sure how big a factor that is in distortion.

I think its mostly that most optic lenses are spherical because it's much easier (cheaper) to grind than aspheric. There are supposedly aspheric lenses in pistol optics, the higher end Sig Romeos and C-More RTS2 are some of them, but I'm dubious whether they really are. See the results in the collage (RTS2 is upper end of mid) and the fact that they're not significantly more expensive. I think the thickness of the lens plays a big factor too as well
