A false dichotomy is a situation in which it is believed or posited that a preference or selection of one choice or option precludes the possibility of any other option.
Example: Steven likes Lord of the Rings, as a result it can be assumed that Steven hates Game of Thrones. Steven ate toast for breakfast, as a result it can be assumed that Steven hates pancakes. Steven plays Call of Duty, as a result it can be assumed that Steven hates Battlefield.
In reality none of these choices are mutually exclusive, and Steven may not even feel a strong preference towards the choices he made, he may even regret them or have lacked critical information which may have changed his decision at the time.
