WW2 did a number on American cuisine, the shelf-stable MREs and canned food industries went into overkill after the war to convince Americans to buy "convenient" foods that they didn't have to prepare themselves. Look at cooking magazines from the 50s, nothing but jello molds and canned shit slopped together with whipped cream and other garbage. Then came the TV dinner, and a generation of Americans raised on them never learned to prepare their own meals.
I'm in my 30s and cook fairly well, I've got maybe a dozen standard recipes I cycle through and try new ones here or there for variety. I work at a restaurant and overheard the idle waitresses remarking to one another how none of them know how to cook, and laughing about getting taco bell every day instead.
If you ever have a daughter make sure she knows how to feed herself outside of just buying canned or fastfood trash.
