Hesiod’s “Golden Age” isn’t Rome’s Republic, and blaming Christianity for what Hesiod was lamenting 700 years before Christ makes no sense. Civilizational decline is a universal human theme. Plato said the same. So did Zoroaster. Christianity didn’t cause that despair. On the contrary, it gave people a moral compass to endure it.

You desperately want it to be about drugs, but the text doesn’t require that reading. “Water of life” is not LSD in a jug, it’s eternal life. If you strip every metaphor down to “drug,” you miss the point and sound like someone who reads Plato and thinks the cave shadows were just about DMT.
