The eastern part of West Virginia has some decent altitude. Plentiful national forest too. People along the Blue Ridge / I-81 corridor aren't friendly, but when you go deeper into the boonies, they get friendlier. Use the visitor map (https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/) to find out where the actual forest plots are, because in some parts of Appalachia they are all inaccessible steep mountainsides.
