Because it is artificial. Mass media brainwashed girls to be one way and boys to be another and eventually 70% of boys find they have virtually nothing in common with the girls and can't get to the same parties or even talk to them without girls screaming "EW" and instantly wanting nothing to do with them. Whereas in the past they'd all be part of the same community, boys would learn how to get along with girls and thus there was more monogamy.
This is all completely unnecessary, it doesn't have to be like this, we could have simply said "no" when we still had a functioning society built on centuries of western culture in the 1950s. In fact it is not if you move from whatever liberal college town you live in. Further modern society is decaying, fast. White birth rates have dropped while muslims and other traditional groups continue to poop out lots of kids.
As a society we need to accept things are not as simple as individual freedom. Women are not "hypergamous" as per the /r/incels meme limited to the top 30% of men. We do not have much more freedom than we did in the 1950s, we merely view corporations and the state as our "tribe" instead of our local community, we stopped being "manipulated" by people we live and interact with, who might care about us like our parents, and started being manipulated by electronic entertainment and people who imitate something they saw on TV, controlled by suits who behave like sociopaths in the pursuit of profit or political power.
