In buddhism there are beings who are called bodhisattvas, who are basically semi-buddhas who have realized illumination and choose to come back to the world to help people be illuminated too, apparently the Tibetan sect believes the Dalai Lama is a bodhisattva reincarnate, more specifically the kannon bodhisattva or also called avalokiteshvara, which is a genderless bodhisattva.
