>Why do people always bring up this experiment as some sort of proof of god or some cosmic revelation or some shit?

The experiment basically throws a wrench into how humanity would view reality. Double slit is more or less a low-key existential crisis because there's not a clear perspective on what the nature of reality is due to behavior at the atomic/sub-atomic scale contradicting large scale matter. Hence why you can have arguments about the validity of concepts like many worlds vs super determinism. Because the double slit can only be """interpreted""" with our limited understanding.

>I still don’t really understand what that means for the jaded layman pondering the meaning of life?

It means three things.

One the reality you occupy is determined by at least two different set of rules. One you can directly observe (Classical/Newtonian), the other you can not directly observe (Quantum). That means you are only getting half the ""picture"" of what you experience everyday.

Two, since no religion or spiritual doctrine has ever describe this behavior of the world. There is no established literature to rectify it to the masses who would occasionally ponder the meaning of life. So there's a possible nilistic feeling that could occur due to dissatisfaction with the "god of the gaps" explanations.

Three the functionality and efficiency of a lot of technology you use is going to continue to be dependent on how well scientist understand Quantum phenomenon in general. For instance one of the major issues with electronics getting smaller and smaller is due to the fact that at a certain threshold Quantum Tunneling will occur. The more Quantum Tunneling occurs due to shrinking electronics (think transistors) the harder it becomes for them to be efficient due to the rules of Quantum allowing electrons to bypass the man made structures because they are too small and thin enough to sufficiently hold matter that doesn't behave the way we are use to.
