Yes and no. Yes, such apperances are often the result of the "self" manifesting. However it is only simple waves of emotion which we often see and experience. When one is apoplectic, then they channel and manifest that which is angry, and in harmony with said "wave".
It is when these things are stripped away, or removed that the "shape" of the soul is made clear. And the bonus is that the shape of ones soul is mutuable, though its "essential nature" remains immutable.
