This happened to me when I did a transfer between my 3DS and 3DS XL. After it finished I had gone into the save data and the second I opened it it said "Preparing SD card" and formatted it instantly without warning. I had lost my nearly one year old Animal Crossing New Leaf save in the blink of an eye.
