I'm a zoomer who played through the original in 2020 with mouse and keyboard, got controller-pilled on it and RE5 when I played RE5 locally with a friend, then went back and beat original RE4 on Professional with a controller.
I personally think the remake is slightly better for the ways in which it expands on half-finished ideas like the blue medallions or firing range, allows for mid-combat quips like the kind in the Salazar fight for example, and interestingly revamps the gunplay while still preserving the element where people endlessly argue over which pistol is the best.
Though I will admit the original shines more for stuff like giving you more control over Ashley's movements, having better cutscene banter in the radio segments, and it's history in the industry.
