Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a game set in a world where vampire society puppet the world from the shadows.
They almost got wiped out during the middle ages and only survived by staying hidden from regular mortals.
In the current day, the existence of vampires being known would be catastrophic for vampires and lead to extinction (despite vampires being individually way way more stronger than humans), as humans are numerous and hold much more dangerous weapons.

So they hold what is called the Masquerade, the hiding of whatever breaks that thin facade of normalcy.
Any vampire feeding on humans seen by bystanders, or showing vampire powers and inhuman physical traits is a violation of the Masquerade and punished by death after a few strikes.
