From what I've seen of shounen writers, leaving things up to interpretation is better than ruining them with shitty explanations.
I liked Minato's teammates better when I was able to just headcanon that the fat boy was the ramen guy's brother and the black-haired kid was Sasuke's mom rather than a random Kumo ninja that was a Konoha shinobi for some reason and a literal who respectively.
