Basically every right wing platform ran articles telling their echo chambers to be mad about it. There where unironically thousands of 40k youtubers and random sub 1000 view grifters who got on their soapboxes to shout about how DEI was ruining something else. The party line was they took boobs out of video games and now they are literally transing custodes. It was a nothingburger in real life but for the people whos entire personality is the culture war they were told to be mad about it.
There were even tons of people saying it was female space marines because they didn't actually know the difference between marines and custodes. Even now, you get poltards ITT who say "it was a litmus test for female space marines" even though the company has gone on the record several times in recent times to say they will never make female space marines.
