I interpreted this as Kris not wanting to draw suspicion from the player. There are a lot of little details that show Kris is working with the knight in this battle, but they're things a most people wouldn't notice the first time. But, Kris's pitiful damage is a lot more noticeable when they're the only one left, so it's a way of saying "No, I'm fighting. See?"
