The Tsurani are Asian inspired but are supposed to be somewhat alien as well. I honestly wasn't that big a fan of the Empire trilogy myself despite greatly enjoying the rest of the Riftwar Cycle. I'd urge you skip them and read Prince of the Blood which continues where Darkness at Sethanon left off.
