"Soccer" was started in England and used as slang for "Association football" and was used officially and unofficially for decades before they decided to revert back to "Football" for whatever reason. This carried over via immigrants to America and became a mainstay term in America to specify football as that's what was the direct term for the sport at the time. This also carried over to Japan and Canada. It's why "Soccer" is as correct as "Football" and people throwing a fit about it is idiotic because it was how the game was called in the past.
