Angkor Wat, the old Khmer capital and one of the most beautiful religious sites in the world is just over the border in Cambodia.
Thais have coveted it for a long time. They tried to grab it in the confusion after the Vietnam war. They got their shit pushed in by Cambodians with the help of Viet Cong.
The city on the border is called Siem Reap "Defeat of Siam" in honour of this.
