That is also junk. Concrete roof tiles are also junk, they are porous, will look 100 years old in 10 years. The only roof that will last a lifetime with 0 issues is clay tiles. It is expensive though and your house better not be made of wood or it may collapse under the weight of its roof. You do have a stone house, right?

I like the idea behind metal roofs but the cheap thin painted shit they sell is worthless, heavy gauge copper roofing is the ultimate. Slate and clay niggers pretend their roofs are great but they can not match copper.

I lived and worked in northern Guatemala for just under a year. The northern half of the country is flat and hot. About 90 degrees year round, with a dry season and wet season. I'm from a temperate climate and had a hard time getting used to it, and the fact that 90% of the homes had corrugated tin roofing made the heat one million times worse.

Metal roofing is rather standard here since it's the cheaper option than tiles which is the other main type of roofing (concrete tiles are the main type) which not only cost more on a materials basis, but add cost to the framing because of the extra strength required.
I've never seen US-style shingles here, probably for good reason as pretty much every home has a rainwater tank.

>a properly installed and maintained copper roof can last significantly longer than most other roofing materials. While asphalt shingles might last 12-18 years, and other metal roofs could reach 50 years, copper roofs can potentially last for a century or more. This longevity is due to copper's inherent resistance to corrosion and its ability to develop a protective patina.

Concrete is the only material a roof should be made of. Icf decking still allows for gables. It has zero downsides. I'm working on my dream house. It will have concrete roof like jap houses. I'll put tile over the concrete so it looks like I'm really in Japan.

Poor or rural, which I guess in many's eyes are the same thing. Metal roofs have some downsides but they last forever so they are the economical option where replacing them regularly is not desirable.

Not aluminum roofs here in Florida which is subject to strong tropical rain storms and hurricanes. Shingle/asphalt roofs will tear apart but metal roofs hold.

You can paint them white which will reflect the most amount of sunlight. Metal roofs are used down south because they keep houses cooler. The high thermal conductivity means they release heat quickly back into the atmosphere.

expensive, also I have an old house. When I replace mine I'll probably just put metal sheet on it that "looks" like a real roof.

I think metal sheeting can look good, lasts quite a long time , easily 50-60 years. And its very lightweight construction so no need to do a lot of work supporting it. It'll be lighter for the house than the current tiles I have on the roof.

you guys are talking about two different kinds of metal roofs

OP picrel is riveted
Heat makes metal expand and contract, loosening the rivets
Then it rains hard and every rivet hole becomes a leak point
You'll be lucking to get 8-10 years out of that piece of shit

A standing seam metal roof is bad ass and will last decades
No rivets
The seam allows for expansion/contraction under temperature changes

Compared to asphalt shingles, metal roofs are more expensive. Its not so much just the material itself, but the installation, edging, etc. With asphalt, you can send four Mexicans up a ladder wirh a nail gun and have a new roof in a few hours. You need some one semi-skilled for a decent metal installation. I don't know why metal is associated with poor people.

A typical shingled roof needs replacing every 20 years here in the SE US. You have to check the thing for damage every couple of years too.
There's so much humidity where I live that pressure washing your home siding is a yearly thing or else you have mold and mildew covering it.
Most of a US home needs constant maintenance, so a roof that just needs some paint every few years/decades would be an improvement.

4. folks believe anythang (literally)

> โ€œits gon sound like a metallica concert when it rain!โ€ bffr, if its installed right u won hear nuffin.

5. roofers b lazy / uneducated
> most dese contractors only know how to lay asphalt like its 1995. soon as u say โ€œmetalโ€ dey start sweatin.
> n if u in a small town? forget it. might gotta drive 3 states ova jus to get da materials.

6. weatha b playin games too
> out west where wildfires b wildin? metal roofs don burn. but in places where its jusโ€ฆ regular? folks ain tryna switch up.
> snow belt niggas b scared of ice dams (but das only if ya installer wuz trash).

so how much it really cost?
> cheap steel joints start at $3โ€“$7 per square foot (jus da metal).
> but after labor? $7โ€“$15 per square foot easy. meanwhile asphalt still sittin at $1.50โ€“$5.50 installed.

da real reason?
it ain dat metal roofs cant get installed, its cuz:
> people stuck in dey ways
> contractors push asphalt cuz its easy
> folks scared of upfront costs (but waste money long-term)
> rules & hoas b on bs

but if u smart? metal roofs pay fo demselves.

This house has sarking/insulation between the battens and metal and also a thick layer of insulation over the ceiling so you still hear the rain which is lovely, but it's muffled substantially compared to the other house.
In the rare case of torrential rain here it can be pretty loud, but having lived previously in a house with a concrete tile roof I much prefer hearing the rain on the roof.

If the installation is done right and you take your time, longer than asphalt. But you need a support structure underneath the metal roof, it needs to be installed correctly, you cant cheap out on materials, and it's probably not worth it for most people. If you are paying to have someone else do the installation, it's going to be about 4x the cost of asphalt and maybe last a few years longer. The screws with rubber washers will last about 30 years if they are screwed into wooden beams and if you use cherry max rivets to connect unsupported metal sheets. Asphalt makes way more sense for like 95% of Americans. I'd consider metal if I had a cabin in the woods that isn't pummeled by direct sunlight and had a bunch of trees to protect it from direct weather like hail. Even if the rubber washers fail, just used a rubberized weather coat and the metal roof will last indefinitely. But since most people are njggers that cant be bothered wirh preventative maintenance, just roll with 20-year asphalt shingles and move on with your life.
