of course the lack of ownership is the first thing you have to give up in arcade.
But if you ask me until the late 90's, arcade as a service where far better cost efficiant entertainement than owning a console.
High end technology, variety of games, for really cheap.
No untitelement by hardware, no console war bullshit. You pay 1/4 a dollar and you play.
RPG was a genre designed for the mass who are not good at arcade/Action game into the video games hobby. No need of reflex or skills.
With the 2nd half of the 5th generation consoles with arcade perfect ports (which cost you extention pack for saturn), a lot of additional contentn (additional characters in Darkstallkers, production IG doing CGI for Tekken 3, FMV endings) and arcade developer using PS1 motherboard as a base hardware (taito gnen, zn1/2) or even Sega with the STV.
additionally with the late 90 and early 2000, with rpg been on multiple cd's and shenmue paving the road for the cinematic genre.
With the Ressesion/ economical crisis/ Japanese Bubble burst and the technical jewing of developers, there was really no reason for the mass to spend more time in arcade.
Arcade developers made even more bad decission puting the money loss on the users, Increasing Credit cost to 1/2$ then 1$ and even 3$ to buy a card for you profil (outrun sp2, wagan, Initial D or even VF5).
Cave paved the way for the mania. they even begin selling to user and not professional.
Arcade was even before cable and now Streaming services, the first exemple of a great service economy collapsing by bad management decison and screwing the consumer.
