>Why are some saved, and not others?
I'm not sure. The parable of the sower explains how believers are lead astray but it does not explain why believers are weak of heart to begin with. When God scatters the seeds he knows where they will land, he knows they will fail, why is that? I don't know.
Is this necessary of us to know good and evil? Is this to glorify the Son? Is this the best outcome? Who knows, perhaps we will find out on the other side.
