Diving into the mythologies that gave birth to Touhou might be what you are looking for. Not really a "spring of content" perhaps, but they are the fountainhead from which Touhou, and so much other Japanese cultured, flowed out from.

Maybe you are feeling the nagging sense that somehow there is more to Touhou than Touhou itself. Maybe that's why you want something that is not "playing the games, some fan games, and reading official works". But what else there is in Touhou? Well, you could argue for the cosplays and collectibles, but you're probably not looking for those either. You don't want "fandom" or "community" either.

You want something that is Touhou but somehow not Touhou. Maybe something more primordial, greater, transcendental. When you look for something like that, you have to go back to the source.
