This. It's been dead since the 80's in a lot of countries, the UK was one of the first to do the neoliberal meme with Thatcher.
Now everybody opts into the same consumer protection style laws, licensing agreements etc.

Basically, fiat currency + neoliberal capitalism killed a lot of social democracy. It's still there in some European countries but since the entire world has gotten progressively more insane since the mid 00's when normalfags got online. You've also got to remember that the GFC happened, everyone got bailed out, no punishments and that class warfare hate and tension just got pushed into austerity and other types of class warfare, direction politics and culture wars got introduced instead.
All while politicians get lobbied to hell and back, they're cheap lays. The big tent "left" groups are demonised by a right wing press, perform purges (trot hunting) and are better at the performative cruelty due to blaming it on technocracy.

Starmer's Labour is occupied by Israel, from his wife to policies on culture, tech. They're "tougher than the tories" which means that if you didn't lobby them, you're out of luck, worker or "undeserving poor", it matters not.
Why'd it change? In the UK at least, unions lost their grip during neoliberalism, fewer and fewer workers in a union, less bargaining power so the right occupied Labour, Kinnock and Blair opened the door to it. Electoral turnout changed and the UK doesn't have a great system to begin with, since FPTP is inherently unbalanced. Look at Wes Streeting, the health secretary, the guy is fucking detested, funded by health insurance companies etc, his majority was only 528 votes on 59.76% turnout. 78,567 registered voters but he can get in on 15,647 votes. FPTP is broken.

In other nations, it'll be lobbying money and the press, same story. People, the general public are buffoons, but also they complain and they don't vote. Democracy is dead and the "markets" killed it.
