I rewatched Stand By Me and noticed this "horrible" matte painting. If this shit happened today in HD, the cartoony clouds and trees would be endlessly ridiculed; but watching it now just made me feel comfy and wistful. As with videogames, desire to be "photorealistic" has sacrificed artistry in favor of verisimilitude.
