I feel the same way. Like I'll watch some crappy b-movie from the 80s or 90s, and find myself thinking the set design looks very inspired compared to movies today.

i think the blue collar aspects of hollywood like lighting and set stuff is dying. the skills are not being passed down and every movie is mad e with blue screens and little sets or real lighting

I rewatched Stand By Me and noticed this "horrible" matte painting. If this shit happened today in HD, the cartoony clouds and trees would be endlessly ridiculed; but watching it now just made me feel comfy and wistful. As with videogames, desire to be "photorealistic" has sacrificed artistry in favor of verisimilitude.

The old system was a blend between art and business, with the artist having more control, the modern system is a formula for how to maximize profits for the corporation using IPs with the artistic element almost entirely removed from the equation

Millennials are worthless nostalgiafags and utterly beholden to the boomer way of doing things, so you'll have to give it a few years til zoomers get a shot at it.

Recently watched, the negotiator. Wasn't a bad movie but not a hit and man it's just a solid movie with great everything in it and it brutally mogs everything the past decade and it was just a 90's dud, it's got a few clichรฉ tropes in it but the difference in quality is obvious.

What's really crazy is going back and reading the few negative reviews for the best movies that came out in like 1997 or some other year with just banger after banger
Is it that you become complacent to quality when you're surrounded by it, or that that situation is what allows you to be rightfully discerning?

The 90's would have 5-10 films per year that are better than anything released in the last ten years. So people just had higher expectations. If you go back and look, even hugely influential films like The Matrix had kind of mid reviews.

Night of the Ghouls, one of Ed Wood's forgotten classics. It didn't get an official release for almost 30 years. It seems to be public domain, since the whole thing is on Wikipedia.

Started making movies for brown people. Often by brown people. Check out Indian movies on imdb. All dogshit but constantly getting 8-9. Hollywood realised they could lower the bar and launder more money while also making profit.
