usually I look into a range I'm going to visit and only ones around where I live. I often don't have a setup where I can comfortably travel with my guns/gear in the car like >>63860783 implied so I can just show up to a random range along the way I found filling up at the gas station.

Maybe you're more mercurial than I am and go to distant ranges on a whim. I imagine if you do competition it's a much more common feeling for you. I don't so it isn't.
