There's nothing to understand. Superman is a character that's been depicted in a million ways in comics and so too in movies. Die hard /co/cksuckers will claim they own the character's identity but will also deny the existence of the countless comics where Superman is more than just a boy scout saving cats out of trees. The truth is that outside of select group of Internet manchildren, that boy scout version of Superman lends itself poorly to the big screen. When you transform characters into real people, audiences are going to demand a more authentic depiction. This is why Superman is fading in public consciousness and why Gunn's interpretation is a severe dud.
