the 4x campaign isn't the hard part imho it's the real time battles, but those aren't particularly hard, and you can always lower difficulty at any time if you're having trouble

you can play without the DLCs, most of it is just extra units and a couple extra factions
they're cool but not essential
there's also two standalone campaigns that change the setting to the Genpei War and the Boshin War respectively, but that's entirely seperate
