Nintendo never owned Rare, Rare themselves entered an exclusive publishing agreement with them. It was then in 2002 that Microsoft shoved $375 million in their face to buy them outright. This was around the time Rare was making DK racing, which got canned, while their own original titles (PDZ, Kameo, Ghoulies, Conker: Live & Reloaded and Nuts and Bolts) got shifted to Xbox systems. They could still make games for the GBA.
