and DESU this tracks with a lot of modern animation, there seems to be this trend of a lot of modern animation having a clean, cute and soft-on-the-eyes aesthetic, on top of trying to emulate the look of 2D with cel shading and rendering and whatnot, and thats fine for most stuff, but you rarely see mainstream examples of the opposite aesthetic.

its crazy because during that initial boom in the 2000s of family animated features you saw a lot more variation in aesthetic and how things were rendered and i daresay the limitations and lack of a "standard" gave every movie a unique feel.
Now things feel like they've all consolidated, same warm, soft lighting, same dense "realistic" detail, same floundering attempts to build on an original style, if there is any. its the standard now, as if the previous variety was just failed experiments in search of it.

Even the character designs fall victim to this, you'll notice how with each movie in the HTTYD franchise, Toothless's eyes got bigger and cuter, and how in the original Despicable Me, not only was the lighting much harsher and sharper (compare Counter Strike Source to CS2 for another example of this), but both Gru and his minions had more angular, slightly jagged teeth, with deeper shadows between each tooth, giving it a slightly creepy vibe, whereas in every subsequent movie, the minions teeth got rounded off like a beanmouth cartoon network character
